Taryn R. Zimmerman is a Partner in Schenck Price’s Family Law Practice Group. Taryn focuses her practice on divorce, child custody, prenuptial agreements, domestic violence matters, and a number of other areas of family law. Her progressive legal training sets her apart from the rest.
Early in her career, Taryn gained experience in securities law, which particularly helped her litigation, arbitration, and negotiation experience in both securities and family law, which made her particularly well qualified to represent divorce clients with financial, business, executive compensation, or spousal maintenance interests at stake. Taryn draws on her skills developed during her 10 years on Wall Street and has a unique understanding of high-income compensation structures and that complex assets should not be simply “cut in half.”
In 2023, Taryn Zimmerman played a pivotal role in shaping the future of New Jersey family law. Representing the appellant in the landmark case of Cardali v. Cardali, 255 N.J. 85 (2023), Taryn and her co-counsel successfully argued before the New Jersey Supreme Court, leading to a decision that fundamentally changed how cohabitation is handled in alimony disputes. Prior to this case, many New Jersey trial courts imposed an "artificially high" burden on ex-spouses seeking to terminate or modify alimony based on the recipient’s cohabitation. Alimony payors were often required to provide exhaustive evidence of financial entanglement (like shared bank accounts) just to get permission to start the discovery process. Cardali provides much-needed clarity and fairness for New Jersey litigants, ensuring that alimony obligations reflect the current reality of the parties' lives.
While attending law school as an evening student, Taryn maintained a full-time career in the financial services industry in the Office of General Counsel at UBS Financial Services and Credit Suisse. After completing a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Arthur Bergman, J.S.C., in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Taryn dedicated her talents to the exclusive practice of family and matrimonial matters.
The summer following her college graduation, Taryn began her legal career as a paralegal at a small matrimonial law firm. Under the guidance of colleague, she learned that practicing divorce and family law requires more than an extensive knowledge of the law; it requires helping clients identify realistic goals and navigating them through one of the most stressful times of their life to achieve those goals. Her compassion, tenacity, tireless advocacy, and ability to identify practical solutions to complicated problems provide her clients with a sense of calm during the chaos of divorce.
