Taryn R. Zimmerman is a Partner in Schenck Price's Family Law Practice Group, where she concentrates her practice on divorce, child custody, prenuptial agreements, domestic violence matters, and other areas of family law.
What sets Taryn apart is the depth and breadth of her legal training. Before devoting her career to family law, she spent a decade on Wall Street, building substantial experience in securities law including litigation, arbitration, and negotiation of agreements. That background makes her uniquely equipped to represent divorce clients whose cases involve significant financial, business, executive compensation, or spousal maintenance issues. Drawing on her years in the financial services industry, Taryn brings a sophisticated understanding of high-income compensation structures and complex assets. She recognizes that intricate financial holdings cannot simply be "cut in half," and she approaches equitable distribution with the nuance these matters demand.
In 2023, Taryn helped reshape the landscape of New Jersey family law. Representing the appellant in the landmark case of Cardali v. Cardali, 255 N.J. 85 (2023), she and her co-counsel successfully argued before the New Jersey Supreme Court, securing a decision that fundamentally changed how cohabitation is treated in alimony disputes. Before Cardali, many New Jersey trial courts imposed what the Supreme Court characterized as an "artificially high" burden on ex-spouses seeking to terminate or modify alimony based on a recipient's cohabitation. Alimony payors were often required to produce exhaustive evidence of financial entanglement, such as shared bank accounts, simply to begin the discovery process. The Cardali decision brought much-needed clarity and fairness to New Jersey litigants, ensuring that alimony obligations more accurately reflect the current realities of the parties' lives.
Taryn's legal career began the summer after her college graduation, when she took a paralegal position at a small matrimonial law firm. There, she learned that practicing family law requires more than legal expertise; it requires helping clients set realistic goals and guiding them through one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
While attending law school as an evening student, Taryn maintained a full-time career in the financial services industry, working in the Office of General Counsel at both UBS Financial Services and Credit Suisse. Taryn completed a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Arthur Bergman, J.S.C., in the Superior Court of New Jersey, and thereafter dedicated her career exclusively to family and matrimonial matters.
