John M. Bowens

John M. Bowens is partner with Schenck, Price, Smith & King and practices in both the Litigation and Environmental departments. Mr. Bowens is also a member of the Insurance Coverage and Construction Law Practice Groups and co-chairs the firm's Employment and Appellate Practice Group . He has been responsible for a variety of complex trials including: environmental litigation, insurance coverage, municipal land use, construction defects, employment, product liability, and professional malpractice. He has assisted insurance company clients in a variety of matters, including the preparation of coverage opinions and providing claims handling advice. . He has also garnered extensive experience in preparing, and taking to trial property subrogation and fraud claims. He has defended numerous bad faith claims on behalf of carriers. Mr. Bowens has also been appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court to its Committee on Attorney Trial Certification and also, its committee on the Rules of Evidence. The Court has also named him to its state-wide Ethics Committee. . Certified as a Civil Trial Attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, Mr. Bowens has also represented governmental entities in a variety of cases, including wrongful death claims, employment issues, civil rights claims and prerogative writ suits.

Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Bowens was a law clerk to the Honorable Anthony T. Augelli, U.S. District Judge. Thereafter, he served as Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey. He then transferred to the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he tried cases in New England and California. He was recognized by the Attorney General on two occasions for outstanding achievement as a prosecutor. He was also selected to serve on the faculty of the Attorney General’s Advocacy Institute in Washington, DC.

A 1970 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and a 1973 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center. Mr. Bowens is currently an adjunct professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University where he teaches environmental law and civil procedure. He is also currently active in a variety of professional and civic associations. He is admitted to the Bars of New Jersey and California as well as the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Third and Ninth Circuits; and the U.S. District Courts for New Jersey and Massachusetts. He has made appearances in many state and federal courts, including the First, Third and Ninth Federal Circuits; the New Jersey Supreme Court and Appellate Division. Mr. Bowens has also been certified as a mediator by the New Jersey Courts and regularly serves as a mediator in disputed actions in both the Law and Chancery Divisions.

Mr. Bowens has been recognized by New Jersey Monthly magazine as one of New Jersey’s “Super Lawyers”. * He was also named by New York magazine as one of the Best Lawyers in the Tri-State Area and was named one of the Best Lawyers in America.
